The Sandler Center Art Gallery is honored to announce that it will host Marlowe Emerson's exhibit, "Look Outside, Look Inside," beginning Jan. 11.

Marlowe Emerson is a native of Virginia Beach. She has been painting and exhibiting since her first art fair in France in 1993. In addition to painting, photography, mixed media and jewelry, Emerson has worked extensively in digital marketing, designing online promotional and educational materials for art galleries, nonprofits and healthcare organizations. She has also gained valuable experience as an art educator, both in private schools in France and at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art. Emerson is currently working out of her home studio, affectionately known as Sharp Corner.

"Look Outside, Look Inside" is a collection of collage and mixed media works that explore the ways in which nature can reflect our state of mind. These pieces invite us to look outside at nature — weather, seasons, light, color, storm and calm — to better understand and reflect on our internal thoughts and emotions — love, peace, anger, turmoil. From stormy beaches to tangled gardens, minds and moods are represented here, entwined with the natural world. The layered, collaged technique also reflects how our past experiences become layered to influence our experience of the present.

Marlowe Emerson's exhibit will be on view in the second and third floor lobbies from Jan. 11 through March 13 during normal operating hours: Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., or during any performance at the Sandler Center.

There will be a free artist reception held at the Sandler Center on Jan. 11 from 6 to 8 p.m. Join us to celebrate the work of this talented artist. The reception is made possible by a generous gift from Tom and Juanita Felton to the Sandler Center Foundation.

The role of the Office of Cultural Affairs is to develop the vision and direction of the cultural arts in Virginia Beach, assist and direct the Virginia Beach Arts and Humanities Commission, coordinate the city's Public Art Program, provide contract management for the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts, provide administrative leadership to the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts' 501(c)3 Foundation and serve as staff liaison to local arts and humanities organizations.
