Volunteers Needed for Annual Point-in-Time Count on Jan. 26

Monday, December 12, 2016

The City of Virginia Beach and the BEACH Community Partnership are seeking volunteers who are at least 18 years old to help conduct the annual Point-in-Time Count of the homeless population. The count will take place on Thursday, Jan. 26, from 4:30 to 8 a.m.

Volunteers will be part of a team assigned to one of the four police precincts in Virginia Beach to help count and administer a survey to homeless individuals living on the streets. Mandatory training will be provided. To volunteer, register online at www.beach-cp.org/pit-volunteer-2017 by Jan. 10.

The city is also asking citizens to call the Lighthouse Day Support Services Center at (757) 385-5160 with tips on locations throughout the city where people have been known to live without shelter. This information will help determine the areas where teams should canvass during the count.

"Each year, we try to ensure that the Point-in-Time Count is as thorough as possible," said Pam Shine, homeless programs coordinator with the Department of Housing and Neighborhood Preservation. "By enlisting the help of the public in identifying other areas where homeless individuals have been known to stay, we're able to enhance our outreach efforts and help ensure that everyone who should be included is counted and assessed for services."

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development requires that each city that receives federal funds through the Continuum of Care conduct an unduplicated count of its sheltered and unsheltered homeless population during a single night in January. Each year, more than $1.4 million is granted through the Continuum of Care to Virginia Beach agencies that provide housing and supportive services to the homeless. The data collected from the count also enables the city to assess the size and characteristics of the homeless population in order to help develop and enhance strategies for preventing and ending homelessness.

For more information, contact Pam Shine at (757) 385-5761 or pshine@vbgov.com.

BEACH, which stands for Bringing an End to All City Homelessness, is a community partnership of city, nonprofit and faith-based organizations. For more information about BEACH, visit www.beach-cp.org.
