Dave Hutcheson Named Interim Fire Chief

​The Virginia Beach Fire Department announced today that Deputy Fire Chief David Hutcheson has been named the Interim Fire Chief.  Chief Hutcheson is a 28-year veteran of the VBFD.  He has come up through every rank of the fire department and has held many specialty assignments. Chief Hutcheson was an original member of the Technical Rescue Program and served on the Hazardous Materials Team. He was the first Recruiting Officer for the Virginia Beach Fire Department, and also served as the Aide to the previous Fire Chief, Steven Cover and the Public Information Officer. He held operational assignments as Battalion Chief in Battalions 1 and 3 until his promotion to District Chief where he was the C-shift Commander and then the North Division Chief.  He was promoted to Operations Deputy Chief on July 16, 2013. 

Chief Hutcheson is an original member of Virginia Task Force 2, the Virginia Beach based FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Team.  As a member of VA-TF2, Hutcheson deployed to numerous large-scale events, including the Oklahoma Federal Building bombing, the earthquake that devastated Haiti as well as many hurricanes along the East Coast.  Chief Hutcheson has held numerous positions on the Task Force.  As Interim VB Fire Chief, he now serves as the Task Force Leader and the Sponsoring Agency Chief. 

David Hutcheson has a Bachelor's Degree in Fire Administration from Hampton University.  He is a graduate of the National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer Program.  Chief Hutcheson is currently enrolled in the Masters of Homeland Security at the Center for Homeland Defense and Security at the Naval Post Graduate School.

Chief Hutcheson is a member of many professional organizations to include; the International Association of Fire chiefs, the Virginia State Fire Chiefs where he serves on the executive board, the Virginia Fraternal Order of Fire Chiefs, and the International Association of Fire Fighters.-

As Interim Fire Chief, Hutcheson will take over for Steven Cover who is now the Deputy City Manager of Public Safety.
