Flood Clean Up Information for our Citizens

Monday, October 31, 2016

The City of Virginia Beach Office of Occupational Safety and Health Services (OSHS) and Office of Emergency Management (OEM) encourage those affected by the recent flooding in Virginia Beach to work safely and take precautions to protect their health during flood cleanup and restoration efforts.

Those affected should first check for structural damage before entering their homes or business and report any damage to local officials. They should also immediately throw away wet contents like bedding, carpeting and furniture because of health issues that may arise with mold. If your home or business is suspect to have asbestos containing material (ACM) in flooring, walls, insulation or other structural components, you should contact a qualified contractor for assistance in removing the questionable materials.

Our Office of Occupational Safety and Health Services provides the following links for important documents, which can guide homeowners and business owners in safely cleaning up their property, restoring the site to comfortable conditions, and managing the resulting debris and materials from their efforts.

For curbside placement and pickup questions regarding pickup of flood-related materials such as flooring and wall debris, wet carpet and furniture, etc., please call City of Virginia Beach Public Works - Waste Management at (757) 385-4650.
