Virginia Beach Receives Certified Local Government Designation From the National Park Service

Monday, September 12, 2016

The National Park Service has designated the City of Virginia Beach as a Certified Local Government (CLG). This certification means that Virginia Beach has established a sound historic preservation program. It also establishes a partnership between Virginia Beach, the State Historic Preservation Office and the federal historic preservation program. Virginia Beach is the 35th Virginia community to receive this designation.

Benefits of being a CLG community include:

  • Technical assistance from the Virginia Department of Historic Resources (DHR) and the National Park Service.
  • Eligibility to apply for matching grants for preservation programs.
  • Full access to DHR's Virginia Cultural Resource Information System (VCRIS), their online cultural resource inventory.
  • Consideration for the DHR Cost Share Program funding for survey projects

With support of this certification, the City of Virginia Beach will maintain an up-to-date inventory of archaeological and architectural historic/cultural resources in the community; establish and maintain design standards in local historic districts; ensure professional representation and ongoing training for the local historical review board; and promote public participation in the local heritage stewardship program.
