Share Your Thoughts on Online Home Rentals at Virtual Town Hall

Thursday, September 08, 2016

Have you had a personal experience – good or bad – with short-term online home rentals, like those promoted on Airbnb and similar sites? Should Virginia Beach regulate them? If so, how?

The Virginia Beach City Council wants to hear from you on this issue. Now through Sept. 28, you can share your thoughts at a city-sponsored online forum, Virtual Town Hall. Visit www.vbgov.com/virtualtownhall.

The City Council is studying the possibility of regulations for short-term online home rentals. The council is concerned about how rentals affect quiet residential neighborhoods – especially with increased traffic, parking and noise. The council also wants to ensure the safety of visitors who rent homes, apartments or rooms.

The City Council has appointed a committee to study the issue and make recommendations by the end of September. The council has received several briefings on the issue. To watch videos of those briefings or to read the presentations and related documents, visit here.

The committee is scheduled to meet three times in September: Sept. 7, 14 and 28. All meetings will be held 6 p.m. The first and third meetings will be at the Virginia Beach Convention Center, 1000 19th St. The second meeting will be at City Hall, 2401 Courthouse Drive, in the City Council conference room.
