Virginia Beach Mayor’s Commission on Aging Accepting Awards Nominations

Thursday, July 14, 2016

The Virginia Beach Mayor's Commission on Aging (MCOA) is now accepting nominations for their annual awards for service to seniors in the community.

Every year, the MCOA recognizes individuals and groups in the community whose service to seniors has been exceptional. This service to seniors must extend beyond work that is required in their employment responsibilities.

For individuals, businesses or groups to qualify for either of these awards, they must either be residents of Virginia Beach or operate their business/non-profit/volunteer group within the city. The commission defines "exceptional" as any contribution – either new or continuing – whose purpose is to expand, improve or establish programs that benefit seniors in Virginia Beach.

The commission recognizes individuals with the Dr. Lanny Hampel Award for Exemplary Service to Senior Citizens, honoring one of the founding members of the MCOA. They recognize organizations with the Meyera E. Oberndorf Organizational Award for Exemplary Service to Senior Citizens, in honor of the mayor who was instrumental in working with Dr. Hampel to organize and build the MCOA.

The awards will be presented at the annual Senior Showcase on Wednesday, October 26th, 2016. The deadline for submitting nominations is Monday, October 3, 2016.
