Hang ten! Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation’s Therapeutic Recreation unit is gearing up for its annual Surf n’ Fun program on Saturday, July 16 and August 6 from 11 am to 3 pm for those ages six and up. Located at the Pendleton Beach surfing area (920 Vanderbilt Avenue), this event is an incredible opportunity for individuals with disabilities to carve up the waves and, gives participants a sense of exhilaration and pure joy. There are still spaces available for registration on August 6 and interested individuals should call 757-385-5990 for information.

“Our goal is not only for our surfing participants to have an amazing time doing something active, but also to boost their confidence and comfort level being in the water,” said Karen Morgan-Hill, Recreation Specialist for Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation’s Therapeutic Recreation Programs unit.

This is the 9th year that the Therapeutic Recreation unit has hosted this popular program for those with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities including Autism, ADD/ADHD, traumatic brain injuries, vision or hearing impairment, among others. As part of the program, each participant will receive a 30 minute instructional lesson on surfing or body boarding. Each surfer is accompanied by three staff members while they’re in the water.
