Donate New and Used Bike Helmets for Children at Virginia Beach Recreation Centers through May

Tuesday, May 03, 2016

Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation is asking residents to consider donating new and used bicycle helmets this May. During the upcoming Bike Rodeo on Saturday, May 28, we want all riders to stay safe. Donated bicycle helmets help ensure that children who may not own a helmet can still participate in the event.

The Bike Rodeo, held from 10 am - 2 pm at Williams Farm Park, will celebrate Bike Month in May by teaching children lifelong bike skills. More info can be found at Children and parents will love the bicycle skills stations, interactive games, bike decorating and parade. Skill stations include Start and Stop, Rock Dodge, Zig Zag, Stop on a Dime, and Figure 8 among others. During all of May, the Cities of Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Suffolk, and Portsmouth partnered with Tidewater Bicycle Association to develop a regional calendar of events to celebrate Bike Month.

Donated bike helmets will be collected at all six Virginia Beach Recreation Centers throughout May, and will be given to children at the Bike Rodeo who arrive without a helmet. As a reminder, the City of Virginia Beach’s City Code requires children 14 years old and younger to wear a helmet when riding a bicycle.

Those interested in donating bicycles as well as helmets for the event can contact Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation Senior Planner Wayne Wilcox at
