Help a Local Child: Learn About Becoming a Resource Parent March 30 or April 1

Wednesday, March 09, 2016

The Virginia Beach Human Services Department is offering two information sessions to educate interested individuals and families on what it means to be a resource parent and how to help a local child in need. With more than 200 children in foster care in Virginia Beach, and more than 4,000 statewide, the department and the children rely on individuals and families in the community to provide assistance when they need it most.

Foster care is a temporary living arrangement providing care and parenting for children who can no longer live in their homes because of abuse, neglect or other severe family concerns. The goal of foster care is to strengthen families. Children may need resource families for a few days, months or years. During this time, human service professionals and resource parents help families resolve problems so their children can return home without further abuse or neglect. When a court determines a child cannot safely be returned to the biological parents or extended family, adoption may be considered.

To learn more and to see how you can make a difference in a local child’s life, please attend one of two information sessions at the Human Services Department, 3432 Virginia Beach Blvd., on:

  • Wednesday, March 30, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
  • Friday, April 1, from 10 a.m. to noon

For more information and pre-registration, which is required, contact Misty Lee, family services specialist, at (757) 385-3214.

The mission of the Child Welfare Division of the Virginia Beach Human Services Department is to protect children from abuse and neglect, promote their wellbeing in stable living situations and provide permanent family connections. Through the provision of family-centered, community based services, we engage families to strengthen their self-sufficiency and capacity to protect, nurture and care for their children.
