Assistance for Heating System Equipment Replacement Available Through Virginia Beach Emergency Home Repair Program

Monday, February 08, 2016

The Department of Housing and Neighborhood Preservation provides heating equipment to eligible Virginia Beach homeowners during the winter season through its Emergency Home Repair Program.

The Emergency Home Repair Program provides low- and moderate-income homeowners with a grant or affordable loan for home rehabilitations that are not of a cosmetic nature, but are required to remove health and safety hazards. Now through May 15, eligible households may have defective heating system equipment replaced under the program, which covers equipment that is part of an existing central heating or air conditioning system.

Other eligible activities include replacing defective air conditioning equipment in the summer, correcting electrical, gas and plumbing hazards, correcting defective roof or ceiling assemblies in life-threatening situations and making accessibility and usability modifications. The program is not intended for making routine maintenance repairs to systems or equipment.

The Emergency Home Repair Program is one of two rehabilitation programs the city offers. The Façade Home Repair Program is also available to assist homeowners with making necessary repairs to the exterior of their homes.

Grants and loans are available to Virginia Beach homeowners who meet income and other eligibility requirements. More information and a short pre-screening questionnaire can be found at www.vbcdc.org (select “Services,” then “Owner Occupied Rehab”).  Assistance is provided based on the availability of funding.

The city’s home rehabilitation programs are operated by nonprofit partner Virginia Beach Community Development Corporation. For more information, contact Marc Thornton at VBCDC at (757) 463-9516.
