Sandler Center Art Gallery to Host “Beneath the Layers” by Gerome Meminger Sr. Beginning Jan. 6

Thursday, December 17, 2015

The Sandler Center Art Gallery is honored to announce that it will host Gerome Meminger Sr.’s exhibit, “Beneath the Layers,” beginning Jan. 6.

Meminger is a Hampton Roads native and a self-taught artist. After retiring from the military, he began to cultivate his hidden artistic passion and became an artist. Meminger’s style of painting is both abstract and impressionist, depending on his mood. He expresses himself on canvas with a colorful yet detailed and calculated painting in mind. Providing a more personal connection with the viewer, Meminger always signs his work with just his first name. He does not strive for perfection, rather he strives to produce heartfelt emotion in his work. Meminger can visualize a completed work of art as he captures the vision and the story in his mind.

“If I wait too long, the image and colors slowly fade from my mind and the painting may be lost forever,” says Meminger.

Meminger’s art has been displayed in museums and galleries and is collected throughout the United States and in Europe. His work has been reviewed for selection in the Smithsonian African American Cultural & Heritage Museum in Washington, D.C. Meminger has also been commissioned for works to hang in the Hampton University Museum and the Hampton Roads Convention Center in Hampton, Va.

Gerome Meminger’s exhibit will be on view in the second floor lobby, Jan. 6 through Feb. 29 during normal operating hours: Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; or during any performance at the Sandler Center.

There will be a free artist reception held at the Sandler Center on Jan. 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. Join us for this special opportunity to celebrate the work of this talented artist. The reception is made possible by a generous gift from Tom and Juanita Felton to the Sandler Center Foundation.
