Get a Hands-On Demonstration of New Voting Machines at Oct. 23 Open House

Friday, October 16, 2015

Virginia Beach voters, are you ready for the Nov. 3 general election?

Get a hands-on demonstration of the new voting machines and cast a demonstration ballot at an open house sponsored by the Virginia Beach voter registrar. The open house will be Friday, Oct. 23, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Meyera E. Oberndorf Central Library, 4100 Virginia Beach Blvd.

All polling locations in Virginia Beach now have digital scanner voting machines. The new system uses a paper ballot, which is digitally scanned into the ballot box. Voters with special needs can vote without assistance by using a ballot-marking station with a touch screen or audio selection.

Virginia law now requires photo identification when voting in person. At the open house, voters who don’t have an acceptable photo identification card may apply for a FREE voter photo ID card. It will be mailed to voters and should be received before Election Day. Residents also can apply for a voter photo ID card in person at the Voter Registrar’s Office at 2449 Princess Anne Road.

The office also is accepting applications for new election officials. For more information on the new machines, identification cards or becoming an election official, call the Voter Registrar’s Office at (757) 385-8683.
