City of Virginia Beach Waste Management Wins SWANA 2015 Excellence Award

Friday, September 04, 2015

The City of Virginia Beach Public Works – Waste Management Division was recently awarded the SWANA Bronze Excellence Award in the Collection Systems category by the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA).

John C. Barnes, Waste Management Administrator for the City of Virginia Beach Public Works received the award at SWANA’s annual conference.

According to Barnes: “We believe that what helped our program to stand out was the fact that we focus constantly on excellent customer service and a strong emphasis on safety.  Combining that with various initiatives allowed the City to reduce collections staff by 22.5 operators over the past six years. The most dramatic of these initiatives was route optimization, which resulted in cost savings of $1.1 million per year and a $2.75 million reduction in equipment inventory.”

Programs under consideration for the award must also demonstrate that they are fiscally and environmentally responsible through their compliance with all applicable federal, state and local regulations.

SWANA’s Excellence Awards Program recognizes outstanding solid waste programs and facilities that promote environmentally and economically sound solid waste management and technologies.  They also focus on worker and community health and safety, as well as public education and outreach programs.

“The Waste Management Division of the City of Virginia Beach’s Public Works Department takes great pride in providing environmentally responsible, reliable, and cost effective trash and recycling services to our citizens,” said Barnes. “The broad range of services meets residents’ needs and is very well received.”
