Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation announces September line-up of free family fun

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (August 25, 2015) – School may be getting ready to start, but Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation is keeping the excitement of summer going with tons of free and interesting events for individuals and families to keep their lives in balance. Whether you take in an art show, visit our community yard sale to snag some unique items, or take the family out for an evening stroll, you won’t be lacking for something to do. Don’t be all work and no play – mix it up, and join us to experience the fun!

Williams Farm Aloha! Back to School Fun Festival (Friday, August 28, 1 to 4 p.m. at Williams Farm Recreation Center)
Before you put the kids back on the bus for the new school year, come on out to Williams Farm for a block party-style day of games, competitions, face painting, bounce houses and refreshments. Come early for door prize drawings and our school supply giveaway (while supplies last.) Join our Facebook event for more details. 


Movie Night featuring “Toy Story” (Friday, September 4, activities begin 7 p.m. at Mount Trashmore Park)
Presented in partnership with Checkered Flag Toyota, we’re showing the movie, "Toy Story" for all you Woody and Buzz Lightyear fans. Bring blankets and beach chairs to get comfortable and watch the big screen under the stars. Come a little early for activities including a bounce house (bouncers will need to wear socks) and appearances from some special movie characters. "Toy Story" will begin at sunset. 40th Annual Artisans in the Park (Saturday, September 12, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, September 13, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Great Neck Park)
Explore the works of talented local artists and craftsmen during the 40th Annual Artisans in the Park, Art and Craft Festival —presented in the serenely secluded backdrop of Great Neck Park. A variety of art and fine craft styles are represented, including pottery, metal and glass work, photography, jewelry, drawing and painting, and sculpture. This weekend of outdoor family fun includes free admission, free parking, live stage entertainment, and food concessions.


Back to School Bash (Saturday, September 12, 12 to 3 p.m. at Great Neck Recreation Center)
Join us for “old school” recess games and activities. Kids of every age can join in and challenge each other to hopscotch, four square, steal the bacon, and so much more. Snack on treats like sno cones, cotton candy, and popcorn. Admission is free with the donation of a school supply.


Treasures at Trashmore (Saturday, September 19, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Mount Trashmore Park)
Sellers: Looking to reduce clutter and clean out your closets? Shoppers: Searching for that one special item to finish decorating a space in your home? Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation is hosting Treasures at Trashmore, an old-fashioned community yard sale. Seller applications are available to reserve your spot now, and are due by August 28 ($30 for a single space and $60 for a double.) Admission and parking is free for shoppers and those attending.


Archery Demo Day (Saturday, September 19, 1 to 3 p.m. at Great Neck Park)
Bullseye! Have you ever wondered if you could shoot a bow and arrow as straight as Katniss Everdeen? This is your chance! All equipment is provided at this free event. Open to ages 6 and up; kids ages 6 to 16 must be accompanied by a parent.


Family Nite Hike (Friday, September 25, 8 to 9 p.m. at Lake Lawson/Lake Smith Natural Area)
Bring your family and a flashlight to explore the park in the dark with us. Hear the sounds of the evening wildlife under the stars on this guided adventure. *Free event, but pre-registration is required. For information, email or call 757-385-4461.
