Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation presents Outdoor Beach Women, an outdoor initiative to empower ladies with new adventure skills. This day for women to connect with activities in the open air takes place Saturday, October 15, 2011 from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm at Munden Point Park in Virginia Beach, VA. Learn the fundamentals of outdoor recreation and education from local experts in a fun, relaxed environment! Each participant will choose four of the following sessions to attend:
  • Archery Basics
    Experience the fun of archery. Learn the fundamentals of target archery based on the National Archery in the Schools Program© and hone shooting skills at the range. Great for the beginner or for an “old pro” to brush up on techniques that ensure success.
  • Explore the Outdoors!
    Become a nature detective! Take this opportunity to hone your outdoor skills including wildlife identification techniques and animal tracking. Perfect for the hunter, the photographer or anyone who wants tips on how to view wildlife in a natural setting.
  • Fly Casting
    Participants will learn how to select equipment for fly fishing, techniques for tying knots, and the art of fly-casting.  Gain knowledge to select flies for a variety of fishing situations. Participants will receive hands on instruction for fly tying one fly. Participants will not fish during this course.
  • Geocaching and GPS
    Find out more about this high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world. Learn to use a GPS and hints to get you to your locations and the treasures that await you! Led by Blue Ridge Mountain Sports
  • Hiking, Backpacking, & Camping
    Learn how to gear up and hit the trail taught by local experts from local experts. You will become familiar with the equipment and clothing needs, as well as trip planning, preparation and safety. Led by Blue Ridge Mountain Sports
  • Intro to Kayak
    An overview of equipment, paddling techniques, and safety issues will be followed by an opportunity to practice with kayaks. Be prepared to get wet!
  • Native Tree & Shrub Walk
    Learn to identify native trees and shrubs found growing in Tidewater Virginia. Sessions topics include: using a plant key for identification, taxonomy of plants, natural history of trees as well as cultural requirements and propagation techniques. Participants will walk around park and examine trees. Good walking shoes and cameras are recommended.
  • Wilderness Survival
    Learn the necessary skills for surviving the outdoors, including hands-on experience in shelter building, the art of fire making, woods awareness, and other survival skills.

Participants must be women age 16 & up. Cost for the program is $65 per participant which includes lunch. Registration forms can be found at or at any recreation center.
