The Firefighter Combat Challenge Comes to Virginia Beach this Weekend

Thursday, August 06, 2015

Virginia Beach, VA – August 6, 2015 – The City of Virginia Beach and the Virginia Beach Fire Department will be sponsoring the Virginia Beach Firefighter Combat Challenge this weekend at Rudee Loop, 104 Atlantic Avenue, at the Oceanfront.

The mission of the Firefighter Combat Challenge is to promote and showcase the talents, skills and athleticism of America’s firefighter heroes in an exciting and entertaining sports competition that travels to approximately 25 locations throughout the country every year. Simulating many of the essential skills of firefighting – e.g., climbing a five story tower, dragging and hoisting fire hose, racing around obstacles, simulating forcible entry, etc. – the FCC identifies and motivates America’s “best of the best” firefighters.

Firefighter teams from all over the East Coast will be competing this weekend, with a “Hampton Roads Challenge” among the Hampton Roads fire departments.  The fire department with the best scores will win the HRC trophy.

The event begins Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. with an opening ceremony featuring Mayor William D. Sessoms, Jr., Fire Chief Steven Cover and the Virginia Beach Fire Department’s honor Guard.  Individual competition will begin at 5 p.m. and continue into the evening.  On Saturday, team relay and tandem competition will begin at 10 a.m. and be completed Saturday afternoon.

Local sponsors include Sun Belt Rentals, Stihl, Inc., International Association of Firefighters (IAFF L-2924), Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital and Sentara Princess Anne Hospital, as well as the City and the Virginia Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau.
