Make No Butts About It

Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation Receives Grant to Participate in Cigarette Litter Prevention Program

Tuesday, August 04, 2015

(Virginia Beach, VA) – Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation is proud to be a recipient of a regional grant for the Keep America Beautiful Cigarette Litter Prevention Program. The Parks and Natural Areas Division created a task force and selected the Lake Lawson/Lake Smith Natural Area as its pilot site for this truly worthwhile effort. Facilitated by AskHRGreen.org, Virginia Beach is joined by Norfolk, Hampton, James City County, Newport News, Portsmouth, and Suffolk as participating municipalities with the goal of reducing the impact of the number one littered item in the United States and around the globe.

As part of the program, Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation conducted a scan of a small segment of the 42-acre Lake Lawson/Lake Smith property and collected 510 cigarette butts and 9 cigar tips. Next, five free-standing cigarette butt receptacles and signage were placed throughout the park. The goal is to educate the public that cigarette butts are litter and provide them with a way to properly dispose of them that doesn’t harm the environment or area wildlife.

On Saturday, August 8, from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., parks staff and volunteers will be out at Lake Lawson/Lake Smith to educate patrons about the program. Guests will learn about the new receptacle locations and receive educational materials. Those who are interested will also receive a free portable pocket and auto ash tray (must be at least 18-years old).

A follow-up scan will take place in September to determine if cigarette butt litter has decreased. For questions about Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation’s participation in grant program, please contact Amy Woodson with the Parks and Natural Areas division at 757-385-0415 or awoodson@VBgov.com.
