Summer Keeps Getting Better in Virginia Beach!

Celebrate First Friday ViBE, Take in a KOOZA Performance, Treasure Hunt or Watch Professional Surfers Catch the Perfect Wave

Thursday, July 30, 2015

There’s still a lot of summer to enjoy, Virginia Beach! There are many events, festivals and activities to take in — plan now to make the most of August. Whether you decide to check out surfers riding the curl at the Resort Beach, watch acrobats under the Big Top, discover hidden treasures at an antique show, or root for local players during one of the world’s largest paintball tournaments, you’re sure to have fun living the life!

Explore our emerging ViBe Creative District during First Friday ViBe (Aug. 7), when local artisans and shops extend their hours to feature special events, music, food and other entertainment throughout the neighborhood’s galleries and stores, located just steps off the oceanfront boardwalk at the Resort Beach.

The heat is on! Come out to Rudee Loop to cheer on our local heroes during the Virginia Beach Firefighter Combat Challenge (Aug. 7, 8). Teams from across the U.S. and Canada - wearing "full bunker gear" -  will race head-to-head as they simulate the physical demands of real-life firefighting by performing a linked series of five tasks including climbing the 5-story tower, hoisting, chopping, dragging hoses and running rescue simulations as they race against themselves, their opponent and the clock. This exciting, free event is fun for the whole family.

Let’s “circle the wagons” for our local players during the NXL Professional Paintball Tournament and Festival (Aug. 7-9). This intense, colorful, action-packed tournament is one of the largest paintball events in the world! Watch as more than 150 teams take on the challenging speedball course as they strategize their games for a chance to take home the win.  Fans of all ages can enjoy this exciting event with grandstand seating, food trucks and a free trade show.

The 19th Neptune Soccer Classic is back, providing a top quality soccer tournament that is both recreational and competitive. Held at the Hampton Roads Soccer Complex (Aug. 8-9), this event is for men and women, and includes coed divisions. Enjoy matches filled with teamwork, fun, positive attitudes and love for the sport!

The Surfers Healing Team (Aug. 14-15), celebrating its 10th year, was inspired by a boy with a disability who found the ocean to be his place of relief. This event is centered on filling disabled children with peace and happiness while catching some waves, guided by volunteers, at Virginia Beach’s Resort Beach. In addition to surfing, there is a 5K run/walk benefiting Surfers Healing Foundation and Autism Society.

Virginia Beach is the place to witness professional surfers riding the curl. Celebrating 53 years, it’s North America’s longest, continuously running surfing competition, the East Coast Surfing Championships (Aug. 16-23). Known locally as ECSC, the competition is also the second-longest continuously-run surfing contest in the world. The best of the best compete at ECSC, including more than 200 of the world’s top professional male and female surfers, as well as an estimated 300 amateur surfers. In addition to the competition, enjoy food and drink concessions and live music on the beach.

ICE at the Beach brings one week of innovation, culture and extreme sports to the Resort Beach (Aug. 28 – Sept. 4). Enjoy the convergence of creative energy from sports, music and entrepreneurship. Keynote speakers will showcase innovation through music, technology and film. Visitors will also be given the chance to land a deal with local investors.

The Virginia Beach Convention Center (VBCC) is hopping this summer. In August alone, the VBCC staff will host more than 10,000 guests for private functions, business meetings and events such as these:

KOOZA from Cirque du Soleil is here in Virginia Beach for the first time (now through Aug. 16), with a Big Top production. Discover a magical, adrenaline-filled display of acrobatics exploring the themes of fear, identity, recognition and power through a wonderful spectacle of two circus traditions: acrobatic performance and the art of clowning. This live performance, held on the grounds of the Virginia Beach Convention Center, is set in an electrifying and exotic visual world full of surprises, thrills and chills.

Art comes in all forms! The Virginia Beach Tattoo Arts Festival (Aug. 14-16), also held at the VBCC, is unlike any other arts festival you've been to before. Come out for live music, live tattooing, side show acts, suspension acts, local art, and more. This festival is sure to amaze!

Enjoy the Town Fair at Town Center (Aug. 21), featuring locally handmade art, jewelry, goods and fair-trade merchandise. On the third Friday of each month, now through September, stroll around the fountain plaza of Town Center to view more than 30 merchants’ handmade and fair-trade goods.

Enjoy music ranging from rock to blues to Motown, delicious food and local artists’ crafts at the seventh annual summer nights at Town Center concert series. This free local’s favorite, Ynot Wednesday, takes place every Wednesday night in August on the Outdoor Plaza at the Sandler Center. The Virginia Beach Farmers Market will have local farmers with their fresh fruits, vegetables, and other homegrown items on the plaza, too. Check out the work of Virginia Beach artists who will set up their handmade/handcrafted items inside the Sandler Center lobby.
