Surf’s Up, Dude! Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation Provides Thrilling Day of Surf n’ Fun for Individuals with Disabilities This Saturday

Tuesday, July 14, 2015

(Virginia Beach, VA) – Hang ten! Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation is holding its annual Surf n’ Fun program on Saturday, July 18 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for those ages six and up. Located at the Pendleton Beach  surfing area (920 Vanderbilt Avenue), this event is an incredible opportunity for individuals with disabilities to carve up the waves, and gives participants a sense of exhilaration and pure joy!

“Their faces just light up with happiness when they’re out there riding the waves,” said Karen Morgan-Hill, Recreation Specialist for Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation’s Therapeutic Recreation Programs unit. “Our goal is not only for them to have a great time doing something active, but also to boost their confidence and comfort level being in the water.”

This is the 8th year that the Therapeutic Recreation unit has provided this bodacious program to those with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities including Autism, ADD/ADHD, traumatic brain injuries, vision or hearing impairment, among others. Saturday’s event has 25 participants registered and each will receive a 30 minute instructional lesson on surfing or body boarding. Each surfer is accompanied by three staff members while they’re in the water.

A second session is scheduled for Saturday, August 1 and there is still space available for those interested. For more information about Therapeutic Recreation Programs, visit VBgov.com/TR.
