Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation is Celebrating 30 Years of National Parks & Recreation Month This July

Throwing it back to the 80’s with outrageous special events and discounts

(Virginia Beach, VA) – Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation is proudly celebrating 30 years of July as National Parks & Recreation Month with throwback 80’s flair! We’re offering up tons of family-friendly events and special offers, listed on, to thank the community for allowing us to be an important part of their daily lives. We invite everyone to experience the fun and join us for this month-long celebration to create memories and explore all that parks and recreation has to offer.

“Our goal is always to provide incredible opportunities for citizens to lead healthy and active lives,” said Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation Director Michael Kalvort. “Parks & Recreation Month is not only a time for us to say thank you to our community, but also to invite newcomers to check out our amazing facilities and amenities.”


Some of the totally radical things we have planned this month include:


PAAC Playdays - Tuesdays in July | 5:30 - 8 p.m. | Princess Anne Athletic Complex
In partnership with Backyard Sports, families (ages 10 & up) will compete in wiffleball, kickball, and short-sided soccer. Bubble soccer will also be available for ages 14-17 and 18 & up. Pre-registration is available online.


Family Dance Party - Friday, July 10 | 6 - 8 p.m. | Mount Trashmore Park
Let’s get physical! Put on your best 80’s workout gear and join our amazing fitness instructors who will get you moving with Zumba® and MixxedFit® at this fun, free event.


Dogs Day Out! Dog Park Open Houses - Saturday, July 11 | Bayville Farms & Red Wing Parks and Saturday, July 25 | Woodstock Park
Bring your pooch for free entrance into the dog park! Proof of rabies shots and City dog license are required to obtain your pass from the park office.


"I Love the 80s" Sprayground Party - Saturday, July 18 | 2 - 4 p.m. | Williams Farm Recreation Center
Cool off and enjoy 80’s inspired games as we pump up the jams! Day pass or membership required; no additional cost.


Sunday Funday - Sunday, July 26 | 12 - 3 p.m.  | Mount Trashmore Park
Games and activities for all ages! Bring blankets and beach chairs for a picnic while enjoying music and delicious food available for purchase from the Eat the Streets 757 Food Trucks!


Summer Movie Night: "Frozen" - Friday, July 31 | 7 - 10 p.m. | Mount Trashmore Park
Grab the popcorn and cuddle up for a movie under the stars! Concessions will be available for purchase. Presented by Checkered Flag Toyota.

Throwback Thursdays - Thursdays in July | Virginia Beach Recreation Centers
Enjoy all of the amenities of our recreation centers with throwback pricing! Purchase a day pass for just $1! Must be used on day of purchase.
Fishin' Fridays - Fridays in July | Little Island Fishing Pier
Pay for one fishing pier entrance fee ($8) and get a second entrance for free!


BOGO Kayak Rentals - Weekdays in July | Munden Point Park
Two times as much fun on the water! Rent a kayak for one hour ($12) and receive a second hour free.


Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation has six recreation centers across the city with a seventh under construction. Residents can join for only $86 per year to take advantage of features including indoor swimming pools, weight rooms, cardiovascular equipment and gymnasiums. Some of our locations boast rock climbing walls, racquetball courts, indoor play structures and youth game rooms. We also offer and maintain over 265 parks, more than 100 miles of bikeways and trails, and naturals areas for fishing, kayaking, hiking and enjoying the gorgeous landscape of our region.


Parks and recreation is about more than just being physically active, it’s about healthy minds and spirits too! From our Out-of-School Time Programs for youth, to our Forever Young program for seniors, along with our competitive athletic leagues, we’re where families and individuals come to build relationships and grow personally.
