Mayor, City Council from Philippines to Visit Virginia Beach July 2-6

Sister Cities Delegation to Strengthen Business and Government Ties

Thursday, June 25, 2015

The entire city council from Virginia Beach’s sister city in the Philippines will visit Virginia Beach from July 2 to 6. The delegation of 29 business, government and educational leaders from Olongapo will meet with local economic, business and medical leaders, enhance ties between the two waterfront cities and tour Virginia Beach landmarks. This is the first visit to America for most of the delegation.

One major goal will be to help build Olongapo’s fire safety system and enhance its 911 emergency operations. Visitors from the Philippines will tour Virginia Beach’s fire training center, the 911 operations center and the fire station in Thalia. The delegation also will tour the Oceanfront, the MacArthur Memorial in Norfolk, the Port Authority and various Sister City landmarks throughout Virginia Beach.

The visit will culminate with a charter signing ceremony 10 a.m. Monday, July 6, in the park at Kempsville and Princess Anne roads, and a groundbreaking for an anchor that will symbolize the Sister City relationship between the two cities. A similar friendship anchor was dedicated in a public park in Olongapo during the November 2014 visit by a Virginia Beach economic development delegation, led by Mayor William D. Sessoms, Jr.

The Olongapo delegation will include Mayor Rolen C. Paulino, all 10 members of the Olongapo City Council, Gordon College President Dr. Imelda Soriano, the president and several members of the Metro Olongapo Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

Olongapo is a city of approximately 220,000 people on Subic Bay, with a strong naval tradition. It is one of Virginia Beach’s four Sister Cities, including Bangor, Northern Ireland; Miyazaki City, Japan, and Moss, Norway. In addition, San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua, is a Friendship City.
