City of Virginia Beach to Maintain Normal Pickup Schedule for Waste Collection and Yard Debris

Irene #064 – 3:30 p.m.

Monday, August 29, 2011

Public Works – Waste Management for the City of Virginia Beach will be picking up the expected additional yard debris along with normal waste collection on their usual route schedule this week.  Residents are urged to keep bagged debris separate from loose yard debris when placing it at the curb.

Waste Management will also be suspending their normal “4 x 4 x 4 Rule” for the next two weeks in light of the unusually large amount of yard debris left in the wake of Hurricane Irene.  Collection guidelines usually require that residents stack any piles of yard debris in piles no larger than 4’ x 4’ x 4’.  Residents are urged to still follow this rule if at all possible, but for the next two weeks, crews will still pick up large piles of yard debris left at the curb.  Any debris left from work done by a contractor, however, must be moved by the contractor.

Beginning the week of September 12, the “4 x 4 x 4 Rule” will be followed.

Waste Management will have crews continuing to monitor neighborhoods throughout the week to ensure that crews are able to handle the amount of yard debris in the wake of Hurricane Irene.   Due to the expected quantities of debris, some of the collection may lag behind the regular waste collection schedule.

For any questions or concerns about yard debris and solid waste collection, please contact Waste Management at 757-385-4650.
