In response to public concerns for safety at Mount Trashmore Park, the city has postponed Friday’s Summer Movie Night event at the park and will continue to close the Mount Trashmore Summer Carnival at 8:30 each night.

Police, sheriffs, parks staff and carnival officials met today to review safety and operating procedures at Mount Trashmore. At that meeting, officials agreed to continue the carnival’s reduced hours and increase security on weekdays and weekends. The Police Department and Sheriff’s Office will provide additional personnel to patrol the area and assist patrons. Lighting at the park has also been enhanced.

Officials agreed to postpone the Friday night movie, “Toy Story,” so the entire park can close at 8:30 p.m. A new date will be announced soon.

“We know that thousands of families look forward to the annual carnival at Mount Trashmore Park, and we do not want to disappoint them,” said Parks & Recreation Director Michael Kalvort. “We’ve been working closely with police to ensure the safety of our citizens.”

Police Capt. Patrick Gallagher, commanding officer of the Fourth Precinct, added, “We want to assure parents and kids that security will be beefed up at Mount Trashmore in the weeks ahead, to prevent any possible problems. We want everyone to have fun and feel safe. There will be no tolerance for violent or illegal behavior.”

Patrons who attended the carnival Saturday, May 30, and purchased a wristband after 7 p.m. are eligible to receive a voucher at the carnival office located at the park. Vouchers, which are good for the remainder of the carnival, will be provided weekdays between 6 and 8 p.m. upon showing a wristband or receipt from Saturday evening. The carnival will run through June 23.
