Virginia Beach Public Library Receives $3,000 from Dollar General Literacy Foundation to Help Beat “Summer Slide”

Thursday, May 28, 2015

Virginia Beach Public Library has been awarded a $3,000 grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation to continue its Summer Reading Challenge outreach to Title I sites at 10 Virginia Beach City Public Schools. The grant, accepted by the Virginia Beach Library Foundation on behalf of VBPL, will be used to buy books for participating children to keep, as well as supplies for programs. At each Title I site, library staff will provide weekly classes and hands-on activities for the children during summer, encouraging literacy skill development and exploring science, technology, engineering, art and mathematic (STEAM) principles.

VPBL has partnered with VBCPS since 2013 to bring the library’s Summer Reading Challenge to Title I sites. The goal is to beat “summer slide,” the learning loss that can occur, especially for children who don’t read or engage in enriching activity during the break. Last year the program served 177 students. Sixty-nine percent of them maintained or increased their reading scores. VBPL won an “Innovative Outreach” award for the initiative from the Virginia Library Directors Association in 2014.

Since its inception in 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded more than $100 million in grants to nonprofit organizations, helping nearly six million individuals take their first steps toward literacy or continued education.

“It is exciting to see the impact grants from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation make throughout the country, especially as we cross the $100 million threshold in overall donations and the difference it has made to nearly six million people,” said Rick Dreiling, Dollar General’s chairman and CEO. “The Dollar General Literacy Foundation truly embodies the company’s mission of serving others throughout the communities we serve.”

About the Virginia Beach Library Foundation

Established in 1982, The Virginia Beach Library Foundation’s mission is to secure, manage and invest privately raised funds, gifts and bequests in support of Virginia Beach Public Library. As a private, nonprofit organization, the Foundation solicits, receives and administers gifts for the library’s benefit.
