(Virginia Beach, VA) – Twinkle, twinkle little star…ever wonder what they are? Take your stargazing to Mount Trashmore Park! The Virginia Beach City Public Schools Planetarium along with local astronomy clubs are collaborating with Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation to host the Mount Trashmore Star Party on Saturday, May 30 from dark to 11:00 pm. Come and observe night sky wonders through a variety of telescopes and learn to identify constellations as they are pointed out by planetarium coordinator Chuck Dibbs and the Back Bay Amateur Astronomers.

See the planets Venus, Jupiter, and the rings of Saturn as you’ve never seen them before. Zoom inside craters on a waxing gibbous moon. Those who arrive before sunset can get a view of the sun through specialized solar telescopes. Learn to identify constellations such as Ursa Major, Leo the Lion, Gemini the Twins, Cancer the Crab, Virgo, and others. Tap the minds of the most seasoned amateur astronomers in the Tidewater area as they share their experiences, equipment, and knowledge of the night sky.

An area  to experience ViewSpace will also be set up. ViewSpace is an internet-fed, self-updating, permanent exhibit from the Space Telescope Science Institute, home of NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. Learn more about ViewSpace at

Attendees wishing to set up their own telescope are invited to do so. The goal is to share the beauty of the night sky with anyone seeking to learn more about it. The event is dependent on clear skies. Hot chocolate will be available for purchase. Also, guests will have the chance to meet the Tidewater Alliance Star Wars Club – from a galaxy, far, far away, this fanforce will be at the event in full costume!
