Round of A-Paws for the 2015 K-9 Karnival at Mount Trashmore Park

(Virginia Beach, VA) - Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation invites canine lovers and their furry friends to Mount Trashmore Park for a day dedicated solely to dogs. K-9 Karnival is an opportunity for all dogs to come paw-to-paw with numerous canine competitions, demonstrations, displays and more!  Free and open to the public, the event will take place on Saturday, May 16, 2015 beginning at 10:00 am at Mount Trashmore Park (310 Edwin Drive) with many giveaways and prizes.  Food and drink will also be available for purchase.  All dogs with up-to-date inoculations are encouraged to attend and bring their owners on leashes!
Activities taking place at the K-9 Karnival include:

 2015 Hyperflite® Skyhoundz® Local Championships
Registration 10:00 am – 12:00 pm; Canine disc competition 1:00 – 3:00 pm
Unleash the champion in your dog during this ever-entertaining contest with amazing displays of canine grace, athleticism and agility. This disc-catching event is open to all owners and dogs, regardless of breed, size or experience. Register your dog to participate and receive a free Hyperflite disc to use during the competition which is yours to keep!
 
 The Hairier Jump Jets Flyball Team
(Across from Shelter 1) Watch the fur fly as the Hairier Jump Jets Flyball Team holds demonstrations throughout the day! Flyball is a fast moving team sport for dogs, involving a racing course with hurdles, a spring loaded plate, and flying tennis balls.
 
• Agility Course
10:00 am – 3:00 pm; cost $2
Come play on the agility equipment, it’s the best fun your dog will ever have! With jumps, hoops, tunnels and more, all ages with their pups are allowed to try out the agility course for a $2 fee. All dogs must be on a leash. Presented in partnership with the Family Dog Club, Inc.
 
• 24th Annual Dog-Gonest Dog Show
Registration 10:00 am; Contests 10:30 am - 12:00 pm
(Shelter 1) This is 15 seconds of fame for you and your favorite mutt! Does your dog love peanut butter? Have him or her compete in contests like the “GREAT Peanut Butter Lick-Off!”  Additional contests include Tail Wagging, Barking, and “Stupid Pet Tricks.” Register at the show arena on the day of the event. Participation is free and prizes will be awarded!
 
• Neuter Scooter & Shot Clinic by VBSPCA
10:00 am – 3:00 pm
A must for every dog! Offered onsite at the "Neuter Scooter" by the Virginia Beach SPCA. VBSPCA veterinarians will provide rabies, bordetella and distemper vaccinations at a reduced rate of $10 each, and found animals microchips at a cost of $15 per pet. Must bring vaccine history in order to receive a 3-year rabies shot or microchip. Low-cost canine and feline spay/neuter also available. Spay and neuter appointments must be made in advance by calling 757-323-7729.

 

• Dog Park Registration
The City has three dog parks consisting of a fenced area where dogs can run free from their leashes. Dog Parks are located at Bayville Farms, Red Wing and Woodstock Parks. Parks & Recreation staff will be at K-9 Karnival to assist with registration. An annual registration fee of $15 is required (for the first dog, $10 for each additional dog). Please bring proof of city license and rabies certificate as proof of vaccination.

 

• Canine Rescue Organizations

Canine rescue organizations will have educational displays and canine activities. Many will have dogs on site for adoption.

 

• Exhibits and Vendors

Commercial exhibitors will showcase a wide range of pet-related products and services. Delicious food will also be available for purchase by Auntie Barb’s Hottie Dogs, Keep it Poppin, Royal Creamery, Tacos Buenos, and The Coop.
