Community service project to enhance Marshview Park

STIHL Inc. partners with Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation to participate in annual PLANET Day of Service

Thursday, April 09, 2015

(Virginia Beach, VA) – As part of the Professional Landcare Network (PLANET) Day of Service, employees from STIHL Inc. are dedicating their time and skills to improve the landscape at Marshview Park, located on Marshview Drive off Norfolk Avenue at the oceanfront. On Friday, April 17 from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. and again on Saturday, April 25 from 8 a.m. to noon, Marshview Park will be closed to the public to accommodate STIHL Inc.’s community service project.

Over the past six years, STIHL employees have volunteered over 1,960 hours and saved the City of Virginia Beach well over $90,000 through the company’s participation in PLANET Day of Service.  Additional partners with this project include Asplundh Tree Service and Virginia Dominion Power. The landscape enhancements at Marshview Park include removing dense vines, deceased trees, and invasive plant species. Mulching, including trail mulching, as well as ornamental plantings will also take place.

The annual PLANET Day of Service event is designed to give professionals in the landscape industry an opportunity to plan, organize, and carry-out volunteer service projects that benefit their own communities. Hundreds of volunteer landscape projects take place each year at schools, community parks, military memorials, libraries, and museums across the country during this annual event.

In December 2014, construction of a new main trail with pedestrian bridges which provides an ADA compliant paved connection from Marshview Drive through the park to Virginia Avenue was completed, and parking areas were added as well. Design for park improvements in the area north of the main trail is underway, which may include a playground, picnic shelters, open field areas, a dog park and additional trails dependent on funding. Final design of park improvements will be based on available funding and community input after concept plans are shared with the public this summer. Construction of this next phase is anticipated to begin in early 2016.
