"A Celebration of Virginia Beach Agriculture"

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – March 18, 2015 – The Excellence In Agriculture Committee will be recognizing the Virginia Beach Department of Agriculture for its continued support of Virginia Beach’s agriculture industry, and education and promotion of agriculture programs, at the annual Excellence in Agriculture banquet to be held Wednesday, March 25 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Virginia Beach Convention Center,1000 19th St., Suite One. This event is held in conjunction with National AG Week which recognizes and celebrates the contributions of agriculture in our everyday lives. Agriculture provides almost everything we eat, use and wear on a daily basis. As the world population soars, there is an even greater demand for the food and fiber produced in the United States.

In addition, the Virginia Dare Soil and Water Conservation District will be recognizing Ken Jensen with the 2014 Clean Water Farm Award for Virginia Beach, for utilizing certain farming practices that positively influence the soil and water around them. Ken has moved almost all of his cropland to a no-till rotation, about 460 acres of no-till corn, wheat, and soybeans. He has participated with Farm Service Agency in forested buffer programs in protecting annual streams around his farm and has experimented with different cover crops to loosen the soil and help with nitrogen fixation.

This year’s keynote speaker for the celebration of Agriculture will be Matt Lohr, director, Knowledge Center of Farm Credit of the Virginias, Owner and Founder of New Directions Communications and former Commissioner of the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

Banquet tickets are still available ($60 per couple or $30 per person).  Reservations can be made via the Virginia Beach Agriculture Department (757) 385-5775 by 5 p.m., March 19
