Oberndorf Memorial Service Set for 11 a.m. Monday at Convention Center

Friday, March 13, 2015

A public memorial service for former Mayor Meyera E. Oberndorf will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Virginia Beach Convention Center, 1000 19th St.

Oberndorf was the longest-serving mayor in the history of Virginia Beach. She held the office for 20 years, from 1988 to 2008. She was also the first directly elected mayor, the first woman to become mayor and the first woman elected to the Virginia Beach City Council, in 1976. All told, she served 32 years on the Virginia Beach City Council.

After Oberndorf left office as mayor, the city named the Central Library in her honor. Many items of memorabilia from her years in office are on display at the library.

She died Friday at the age of 74.
