Virginia Beach Now Operating Two Shelters

At 9 a.m. today, the City of Virginia Beach closed the following shelters:

  • Birdneck Elementary School
  • Cox High School
  • The Virginia Beach Field House

Of the remaining open shelters, Salem High School will close at noon and the shelter at Landstown High School should close by 5 p.m.  After that time, citizens needing sheltering or further assistance should call the American Red Cross at 536-9862 or Connection Point at 227-5932.  Connection Point is open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. – 11 p.m.

During Hurricane Irene, 624 people checked into the five city shelters.

  • City’s VBTV Channels: Cox Cable 46, 47 & 48 and Verizon Cable 45, 46 & 47 will display emergency information including our City operational status and facilities closure notices
  • Television Channels: WTKR 3, WAVY 10 and WVEC 13

  • Citizen Services: 311 (landlines within City limits) or 385-3111; provides the City’s current operating condition status and facilities closure notices; please do not call 911 unless you have an emergency.
