City Urges Motorists to Be Extra Cautious

Irene #051 – 10:20 a.m.

Sunday, August 28, 2011

The Virginia Beach Police Department advises residents to be extra cautious as they travel on city roadways.  There are 22 major intersections where traffic signals are currently without power, and numerous others where traffic signals are flashing.

In the Town Center area, the signals at Independence Boulevard and Bonney Road are out.  On Virginia Beach Boulevard, the signals are out at the intersections at Rosemont Road, Lynnhaven Parkway and Witchduck Road.

If a law enforcement officer is directing traffic at the intersection, the officer must be obeyed. Failure to do so could result in being charged with a Class 1 misdemeanor.

If there is not a law enforcement officer directing traffic at the intersection and the traffic lights are completely out, the intersection shall be treated as a 4-way stop. If the light is flashing yellow, please slow down and proceed with caution. If the light is flashing red, please come to a complete stop and obey the right of way.

Many streets are impassable due to high water, debris and downed power lines -- making travel difficult and dangerous.  The city’s Department of Public Works is working to clear debris throughout the city.
