City of Virginia Beach Announces Two New Mobile Apps

​The city of Virginia Beach launched two free mobile apps designed to make information even more accessible and provide residents the capability to submit service requests via their mobile devices.

“An increasing number of residents are using mobile devices to access city services,” said Chief Information Officer Matt Arvay. “In one year alone, we saw mobile traffic surge by 27,000 visits on VBgov.com. These two new apps open a new door for citizens to connect with their government in a format that is truly intended for mobile platforms.”

VB Connect, is a portal app that provides access to all official City of Virginia Beach mobile applications. Here, citizens and visitors can find city news, photos, hot topics, city job vacancies, contact information, and more. Residents can even find apps for searching a location of parks based on preferences such as ‘picnic shelter,’ or ‘playgrounds’; download Virginia Beach public library apps for free digital songs; or access free e-books.

“VB Connect is a distinguishable central portal for the city’s mobile applications and services, a ‘one-stop shop’ in essence,” said Chris Golding, the mobile apps team lead. “This is just the beginning. We already have additional apps in development that will keep our community connected and informed.”

The VB Works app, which is now available and is powered by SeeClick Fix, enables citizens to submit service requests such as pothole repairs, traffic light problems, or bulky item pick-ups directly from their mobile devices. When submitting issues via the mobile app, residents can provide locational, descriptive, and photographic information as they see the issue in real time. Once the resident submits an issue, city employees and anyone else who may have reported the same concern will receive an alert. The city will acknowledge the service request, route it to the proper department to be addressed, and update the request so that the individual who submitted it, as well as those “following” the issue, will know once it has been resolved. Citizens can also provide feedback, request information and even create their own “watch areas” to receive notifications about all issues reported in their community, enabling them to follow the progress of all service requests — not just the ones they report.  

Both apps are available for download free of charge via the Apple Store and Google Play​

The apps are a direct result of the city’s Communications and Information Technology Master Plan to develop innovative technologies that customers demand, add value to the community, and provide simple, open access to information.
