Planning Commission Announces 2014 Design Award Winners

The Planning Commission announced the winners of the 2014 Design Awards Program at its meeting on Dec. 10. The program encourages and recognizes creative and innovative development solutions in the built environment.   

Honor Awards were presented in the following categories:


  • Residential Development – Old Beach Homes at 417, 419 and 421 24th ½ St. and 416, 418 and 420 25th St.
  • Commercial Development – Operation Smile World Headquarters
  • Strategic Growth Areas – 4525 Main St. and Hilton Garden Inn, Lager Heads Café and 34th Street Stage
  • Sustainable Development – Kellam High School
  • Public Facilities – Adventure Park at the Virginia Aquarium. 


Merit Awards were presented in the following categories:


  • Strategic Growth Areas – Widgeon Professional Center
  • Renovation or Adaptive Reuse – Atkinson Realty, and Colonial Shooting Academy.
