Help a child with special needs! Become a Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation Play Pal volunteer.

Monday, December 08, 2014

Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation is seeking volunteers to help youth with special needs participate in after school and summer camp programs. As a Play Pal, you will be assigned to a child who has special needs. The type of assistance you will provide varies. For example, you might help youth who need assistance moving from one place to another. Or you could provide one-on-one assistance to allow an individual to fully participate in sports and active games.

As a volunteer, you will join the team that implements Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation. The child, parent, and Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation program staff are also integral parts of this team.

A 2-day per week commitment is required from each volunteer, although a Monday through Friday commitment is ideal. Training is provided, although prior experience as a direct care assistant, nurse or a health related position is ideal. Some past experience in the field of recreation is also helpful. Play Pal volunteers must be at least age 18.

Those interested in volunteering should apply online at www.VBgov.com/Volunteer.  For more information about Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation’s Play Pal volunteer opportunities, please contact Colleen Wittig at cwittig@VBgov.com or (757) 385-0444.
