Arena Town Hall Meeting to Be Held Dec. 3

Thursday, November 20, 2014

Concerned citizens can hear the latest updates on the proposed Oceanfront arena, and express their opinions to city leaders, at a Town Hall meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 3. The meeting will be 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Virginia Beach Convention Center, 1000 19th St., in the first-floor ballroom.

The developer, United States Management, has proposed building a $200 million sports-and-entertainment arena on 19th Street, across from the Convention Center. The building would be entirely financed, maintained and operated by the developer. The city would install infrastructure outside the arena, including parking, a plaza and utilities.

At the Dec. 3 meeting, city staff will present a proposed draft agreement laying out responsibilities of the city and the developer. USM will present the latest details of the project. Both sides will discuss a recent fact-finding trip to Lincoln, NE, to see the recently opened Pinnacle Bank Arena, which is similar to the arena proposed for Virginia Beach.

After the presentations, citizens will be asked questions to elicit their input, and the feedback will be provided to City Council. Experts will be on hand to answer questions.

A formal public hearing at the City Council meeting also will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 2, at 6 p.m.
