Homelessness Awareness Events to be Held in Virginia Beach

​The Virginia Beach Human Rights Commission (HRC) and Volunteers of America, in partnership with the Department of Housing and Neighborhood Preservation, the BEACH Community Partnerships, and the Rotary Club of Hampton Roads, will host Homelessness Awareness Week (Dec. 15 to 21) and Homeless Memorial Day (Dec. 21) in Virginia Beach.

A donation drive will be held Dec. 15 to 21. Virginia Beach citizens are encouraged to take part in this community outreach to assist fellow citizens experiencing homelessness. If you can assist, the following donations would be greatly appreciated: new or gently used blankets (twin size only), jeans (men’s and women’s - all sizes), socks, towels and toiletries (travel size). Volunteers of America will also accept monetary donations. 


Donated items can be dropped off Dec. 15 to 21 

Monday - Friday (7 a.m. to 7 p.m.)

Saturday (7 a.m. to noon)

Sunday (7 a.m. to noon)

“Please take a few moments during this awareness week to assist our homeless citizens,” said Cliff Rice, chairman of the Human Rights Commission. “We are asking business owners, civic leagues and organizations to join us in this effort of caring and sharing. Your acts of kindness are greatly appreciated.”


National Homeless Memorial Day Vigil

Sunday, Dec. 21, 7 p.m.

“We hope citizens will take a moment out of the longest night of the year to remember those who have died, and also to honor persons who are still facing the challenges of homelessness every day, by attending the National Homeless Memorial Day Vigil,” said Debbie Maloney, Director of Volunteers of America.
