Virginia Beach Clean Community Commission Volunteers to be Honored Nov. 5

Tuesday, October 21, 2014

The Virginia Beach Clean Community Commission (VBCCC), in collaboration with the Virginia Beach Waste Management Division and the Parks and Recreation Department, is gearing up for its annual Volunteer Dessert Reception and Appreciation Event. On Nov. 5, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Westminster Canterbury, the volunteers will be honored for their work with the VBCCC from July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014.

The VBCCC is a City Council-appointed commission dedicated to creating a cleaner, more beautiful Virginia Beach. Their volunteer opportunities include Adopt-a-Programs, Clean the Bay Day, Earth Day, the Helping Hands Program, and Storm Drain Marker Program. These program’s volunteers will be featured at the Appreciation Event as well as Waste Management Volunteers who staff division events.

The Appreciation Event will feature keynote speaker Anthony Burcher, conservationist and story teller. He plans to tell a story about being born and raised in Eastern Virginia and how it made him a lifelong lover of nature and a loyal conservationist. Through a series of misadventures fighting nature, he finally came to respect it. Recently, Burcher was only one of six storytellers chosen from across the nation to participate in the Story Slam at the National Storytelling Festival, where he was awarded second prize.
