Commonwealth v. George Shashawn Tyree Gay; 18 Years to Serve for Participation in Robbery, Murder

Tuesday, July 22, 2014

Colin D. Stolle, Commonwealth’s Attorney for the City of Virginia Beach, announced today that George Shashawn Tyree Gay, 21 years old, previously residing in the 4700 block of White Tail Court in Virginia Beach, Virginia, was sentenced today by Circuit Court Judge William R. O’Brien for charges of Second Degree Murder, Malicious Wounding, Robbery, and Use of a Firearm.  Judge O’Brien sentenced Gay to 63 years in prison with 45 years suspended leaving 18 years to serve.

Gay pled guilty on November 27, 2012. Had this matter gone to trial, the Commonwealth’s evidence would have proven that on September 2, 2011, George Gay and co-defendant Jordan Austin robbed Terrance Scott at gun point while Mr. Scott was visiting a friend in the Bridle Creek apartments in the city of Virginia Beach.  Austin and Gay robbed the victim of his cell phone, sneakers and baseball cap.  Austin and Gay then fled the scene.  Scott left the area but later returned with several people including Antone Brehon and Antoine Owens, with the intent of recovering his property. Austin, Gay, and three others returned to Bridle Creek apartments looking for the victim and his group.  Austin and the other two men had weapons.  As Mr. Scott and his group got in their cars to leave, Austin and the two other gunmen ambushed the group with a barrage of gunfire.  Brehon was struck in the head, killing him instantly. Owens was also shot in the head and suffered permanent injury.

Gay admitted to his involvement in the crimes and cooperated with the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office.

Jordan Austin was found guilty of First Degree Murder, Aggravated Malicious Wounding, Robbery, Conspiracy (2 counts) and Use of a Firearm (3 counts).  Austin is scheduled to be sentenced on September 10, 2014.

Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Patrick J. Connolly and Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Katherine E. Orsini prosecuted the case. Please contact Macie Pridgen if additional information is desired.
