Oceanfront Drowning

Just before 2:00 pm, Sunday, June 1st, Virginia Beach Emergency Communications received a report of a possible drowning near 61st Street.  An adult male had been swimming in the ocean.  At some point it was noted by other members in his party that he had not been seen for at least 15 minutes.  A report was made to the lifeguard at 57th Street who responded to the area.  Shortly afterward, the lifeguard spotted the victim floating face down approximately 50 yards from shore.  The lifeguard recovered the man with the assistance of a bystander and a second lifeguard who responded from 57th Street.  Meanwhile emergency crews from the Police, EMS and Fire Departments responded to the scene.    


Emergency medical personnel initiated treatment on the beach.   He was transported by ambulance to Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.


The victim has been identified as Benjamin Mccallister, 46 years old.  He lived in West Virginia. 


There are no lifeguard stands at 61st Street.  Two stands are deployed near 57th Street 9:30 to 6:00 daily.  A single lifeguard patrols the area between 41st Street and Fort Story using an ATV 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
