City Council Appoints Parke to Lead Volunteer Office

Wednesday, May 28, 2014

The Virginia Beach City Council has appointed the Rev. James Parke as director of the Office of Volunteer Resources. Parke is a retired priest from Church of the Ascension and Holy Apostles, and served on the city’s Human Rights Commission since 2008, most recently as chairman.

Parke succeeds Mary Russo, who died March 19 at age 87. She founded the Office of Volunteer Resources in 1978 and served as its director until her death.

Last year, more than 20,000 city volunteers worked more than 1.4 million hours in dozens of places – among other things, manning ambulances, teaching children to read, helping stray animals, coaching sports teams and beautifying neighborhoods. There are approximately three city volunteers to every paid city employee. Their volunteer work is the equivalent of having 682 full-time workers, worth more than $20 million.

The 2012-13 annual report from the Office of Volunteer Resources can be found here.
