Salem High School Shelter Available for People with Medical Needs

Irene #019 – 1 p.m.

Friday, August 26, 2011

At 6 p.m. today, the city will open a shelter at Salem High School, 1993 Sun Devil Drive, to support a small number of people with basic medical needs. This shelter can only support 50 cots. The school has expanded generator capacity to support electrically dependent needs. Nurses will be available for medical monitoring only.

Residents with advanced medical needs (ventilator dependent, complex medical conditions, bedridden, etc.) cannot be accommodated at this shelter. These evacuees must seek support from local hospitals. Nurses will interview clients as they arrive, so the shelter does not exceed its capabilities of care.

Minimal supplies will be available, and no medications will be available, so resident who come should bring all necessary medications and supplies. Please consult with your physician for recommendations on evacuating and sheltering in place.
