Beaches to Close on Saturday at Daybreak

Irene #014 – 11:45 a.m.

Friday, August 26, 2011

Based on the current weather track for Hurricane Irene, the Department of Emergency Medical Services is closing all Virginia Beach public beaches to public access staring at daybreak Saturday, Aug. 27 until the resumption of lifeguard services on Sunday, Aug. 28.  This is an earlier timeframe than was previously released.

Swimming and wading will be prohibited as conditions are expected to be unsafe, based on current forecasts. Rescue services probably will not be available in the event of an emergency. This closure is effective for all bayfront and oceanfront beaches in the City of Virginia Beach, and the Virginia Beach Police Department will patrol public beaches to ensure compliance.
