City Upgrades Sandbridge Evacuation to Mandatory

Irene #0012 – 5:10 p.m.

Thursday, August 25, 2011

The City of Virginia Beach has upgraded its previous order and is issuing a mandatory evacuation of  Sandbridge beginning at  noon on Friday, Aug. 26, to noon Saturday, Aug. 27.  The city urges residents and visitors to stay away until the storm has passed.

When the hurricane arrives, Sandbridge may be cut off from the mainland. Police, firefighters and paramedics may be delayed in responding. Starting 8 a.m. Saturday, the access road into Sandbridge will be closely controlled to discourage people from entering the area.

Residents and visitors are strongly urged to depart Sandbridge by Saturday noon and to await the storm’s passing.  This neighborhood is subject to storm surge, large waves and hurricane-force winds.

People evacuating should stay with friends or relatives out of the low-lying areas or go to a city shelter. Evacuation should be completed by noon Saturday.  Evacuees leaving the city should monitor weather reports, leave as soon as possible to avoid heavy traffic, and travel well beyond the projected path of the hurricane.  If you are going to evacuate out of the area, leave now to avoid the heavier traffic delays expected later.

Four city shelters will be opened during the storm. Two will open at 6 p.m. Friday:

1.  Landstown High School - 2001 Concert Drive

2.  Salem High School - 1993 SunDevil Drive

Two more shelters will open at 8 a.m. Saturday:

3. Cox High School - 2425 Shorehaven Drive

4.  Birdneck Elementary School – 957 S. Birdneck Road

The public shelters are available to anyone in the City of Virginia Beach who feels they would be safer in a shelter than in their home. Pets are not permitted in public shelters.
