City of Virginia Beach Hurricane Preparation Recommendations

Irene #011 – 5 p.m.

Thursday, August 25, 2011

Based on the projected impacts posed by Hurricane Irene, the City of Virginia Beach is requesting residents and visitors to prepare in advance. Because of the anticipated severity of the storm, residents are urged to keep informed of current and forecast weather conditions. We expect hurricane and tropical-force winds, storm surge, large waves, intense rain and localized flooding.

Depending on your circumstances and where you live, you should make decisions or be prepared to make decisions about how you will handle a hurricane. The city is recommending that the following residents consider leaving the area or moving to one of our city shelters:

  • People with special needs or disabilities;
  • People with electrical health equipment;
  • People in flood zones; and
  • People in mobile homes.

The city also recommends that all Virginia Beach residents consider the following in their pre-planning:

  • Discuss your family’s plans for disaster;
  • Have an emergency supply kit of food, medications, water, first-aid supplies, battery powered radio, flashlights, batteries, sleeping bags, blankets, etc.;
  • Identify an out-of-state relative or friend to serve as a “family contact.” Make sure everyone in the family knows the name, address and phone number of the “family contact”;
  • Be knowledgeable on how to text when cell phones cease to transmit;
  • Make provisions for pets in case of evacuation as they are not allowed in public shelters;
  • Identify alternative shelters such as other family members or friends; and
  • Listen to your local radio and television stations for the most up-to-date information.

Residents are urged to be informed of current weather conditions and stay tuned to local television and radio stations including the City’s VBTV channels, which will display emergency information including City operational status and facilities closure notices:

  • Cox Cable 46, 47 & 48 and Verizon Cable 45, 46 & 47.
