City to Close Public Beaches to Swimming, Wading and Surfing

Irene #006 – 5:15 p.m.

Thursday, August 25, 2011

Based on the projected impacts of Hurricane Irene, the Virginia Beach public beaches will be closed to swimming, wading and surfing staring at noon Saturday, Aug. 27 until the resumption of  lifeguard services on Sunday, Aug. 28.

Swimming, wading and surfing conditions are expected to be unsafe due to storm surge, large waves and rip tides. Rescue services will likely not be available in the event of an emergency. This closure is effective for all bayfront and oceanfront beaches in the city.
