Virginia Beach Welcomes 2013 Air Medical Transport Conference

International conference brings more than 2,500 air medical transport professionals from around the world; 11 medical transport aircraft to land at Convention Center and General Petraeus will serve as keynote speaker

(Virginia Beach, Va., October 17, 2013) – Virginia Beach will host more than 2,500 air medical transport professionals from across the globe during the 2013 Air Medical Transport Conference (AMTC). On Saturday morning, 11 medical transport aircraft will land in the Virginia Beach Convention Center parking lot and then be towed into the exhibit hall. During the three-day event, Gen. David H. Petraeus (US Army, Retired), a highly decorated four-star general and one of the most renowned military leaders in recent U.S. history, will serve as one of the keynote speakers. The AMTC will generate an estimated $1.2 million in direct spending for Virginia Beach and has resulted in 3,600 hotel room nights booked in the city.

Every 90 seconds in the United States alone, a MedEvac helicopter responds to a call to help a person in need. Annually, MedEvac helicopters transport approximately 400,000 patients. The AMTC is the largest gathering of its kind worldwide and will cover topics including safety, core clinical, specialty clinical, management, aviation, research, and communications/dispatch. The Virginia Beach CVB is hosting the 2013 Air Medical Transport Conference


2,500+ air medical transport professionals worldwide will gather for this three-day event featuring nationally recognized guest speakers, 150+ education sessions and more than 160 vendors who will showcase the latest in products and services specific to air and critical care ground medicine. AMTC organizers include the Association of Air Medical Services, the Air & Surface Transport Nurses Association, the Air Medical Physician Association, the International Association of Flight & Critical Care Paramedics, the National Association of Air Medical Communication Specialists, and the National EMS Pilots Association.​


Opening session begins at 8 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 21 and concludes Wednesday, Oct. 23 with a memorial service.


The medical transport aircraft fly-in will occur on Sat., Oct. 19 beginning at 10 a.m. in the South parking lot of the Virginia Beach Convention Center.  Road closures for a parade will limit access to 19th Street. The public is encouraged to observe posted signs.

Air Medical Transport Aircraft Fly-in

Eleven medical transport aircraft are scheduled to begin landing in the South parking lot of the Virginia Beach Convention Center at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19. The aircraft will then be towed into the exhibit hall.  The public is invited to observe the fly-in; the Convention Center will not be open to the public.  Note:  19th Street will be temporarily closed for a community parade until noon. Access will be limited; expect some delay due to detours.

  • Connie Merritt, BSN, RN, PHN, compelling healthcare speaker, storyteller and award-winning author –Monday, Oct. 21, 8 a.m., VBCC Ballroom.

  • U.S. Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory crew survivability expert, specifically with regard to head protection and helmet safety – Tuesday, Oct. 22, 8 a.m., VBCC Ballroom.

  • Gen. David H. Petraeus (US Army, Retired), decorated four-star general and one of the most effective military leaders in recent U.S. history – Wednesday, Oct. 23, 9:30 a.m., VBCC Ballroom.

Virginia Beach EMS Extends Hospitality to Air Rescue Colleagues from Around the Globe

Medics and pilots from the Virginia Beach Emergency Medical Services (EMS) will serve as hospitality hosts during the conference. The Virginia Beach Rescue Squad’s vintage ambulance will be on display in the exhibit hall.

CAE Cup Competition

Competing flight teams practice and display their emergency patient-care skills on a state-of-the-art emergency-care patient simulator provided by CAE Healthcare. This competition is ongoing in several locations at the Virginia Beach Convention Center with the Finals occurring Tuesday, Oct. 22 during the lunch hour in the exhibit hall, Booth 1722.

Memorial Lights Tribute

A memorial tribute to honor those who have died in the line of air medicine will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 7:30 p.m. on the grounds of the Virginia Beach Convention Center, southwest corner.
