Oceanfront Drowning Update

At 12:59 pm, Thursday, September 19, Virginia Beach Emergency Communications received a 911 call reporting a possible drowning near 24th Street.  An adult male had been swimming prior to bystanders and family on the beach observing that he was not moving and was drifting away from the shore.  Emergency crews from the Police, EMS and Fire Departments responded along with the City’s contracted lifeguard service.   Lifeguards performed a rescue, bringing the man ashore unconscious. 


Emergency medical personnel initiated treatment on the beach.   He was transported by ambulance to Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.


The victim’s identity is not available at this time.


Lifeguards patrol the oceanfront area using ATVs or trucks 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily during the last two weeks of September.  There are no lifeguard stands deployed after September 15th.
