Oceanfront Drowning Update

At 2:12 pm, Saturday, July 27, Virginia Beach Emergency Communications received a 911 call reporting a missing swimmer in the ocean off 79th Street.  The caller reported a boy had been swimming with friends when he experienced difficulties.  He was last seen 20-30 feet offshore.  Emergency crews from the Police, EMS and Fire Departments responded along with the City’s contracted lifeguard service.   Ultimately, more than 40 personnel participated in the search utilizing four boats, a helicopter and ATVs.  A team of lifeguards formed a search line wading through the area while sonars from the boats probed the bottom.

 

As the search continued, the missing boy was spotted in the surf off 78th Street by personnel on the beach at 4:16 pm.  Bystanders and police officers started CPR.   He was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

 

The child has been identified as Demonte White, 14 years old.  He lived on Broadfield Road in Norfolk.  The incident remains under review by the Virginia Beach Police Department.
