In 2012, approximately 23% of total traffic to the Virginia Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau official website was from a mobile device, up from 11% in 2011. According to TripAdvisor, 44% of U.S. travelers plan to use their smartphone this year as a travel resource while eMarketer notes that 80% of all travelers take their mobile devices with them while on the road. With rapid growth in the use of this technology, Virginia Beach is pleased to announce the launch of an updated mobile version for This iteration includes a more eye-catching aesthetic, better functionality, more robust content, enhanced options for research and trip planning tools and pages based on type of visitor.

The new look features a light-colored sky background with a beach umbrella. Buttons that are most commonly used are prominently displayed close to the top of the homepage, including “Things to Do,” “Where to Eat,” “Places to Stay” and “Upcoming Events.” A static bar at the bottom allows users to easily return home, utilize a search bar, access a “near me” function and view the current weather.

Several new tabs were added as well. “Our Beaches” explains the differences between Virginia Beach’s three beach areas and additionally posts the most current Beach Report from the Shorelines Blog. The “Explore” tab provides access to the Shorelines Blog, Virginia Beach weather, articles and travel directions complete with links and contact information, mileage from major cities and a “map it” option for obtaining directions.  It also allows users to navigate the site based on the type of visitor they are -- leisure vacationers, international travelers, meeting planners and attendees, sports groups and group tour planners.

Unlike a traditional mobile app, the mobile site does not have to be downloaded to the mobile device, making it easily accessible and capable of working across all mobile devices. The new mobile site is viewable on any Smartphone device. On iPads and other brands of tablets and notebooks, users will see the full website instead of the mobile version.
